Etruscan Necropolis

On the southern slopes of the Monterozzi hill, along one of the ancient roads leading to the Etruscan town, are located the two tombs of Doganaccia, known as the Tumulo del Re (Tomb of the King) and the Tumulo della Regina (Tomb of the Queen).
The tombs date back to the Orientalising and Archaic periods (7th-6th centuries BC) and are made up of an imposing base, partly excavated in the rock and covered with square blocks, and covered by a mound of earth.
They were excavated in 1928 by the archaeologist Giuseppe Cultrera (founder and first director of the Archaeological Museum of Tarquinia) and are currently undergoing restoration work aimed at enhancing and promoting their accessibility.
