Gate and gateway tower of Maddalena (known as Dante Tower)

Gate and gateway tower of Maddalena (known as Dante Tower)

12th-17th century

It takes its name from the adjacent parish church, which no longer exists, and is also known as the Dante Tower. After the Unification of Italy, it was called Porta Romana.
Built inside the pre-existing walls, it was constructed in three phases (12th-17th centuries): the first reached the height of the adjacent wall, the second (around 1453, under Pope Nicholas V, whose coat of arms is displayed on the tower) reached three-quarters of its total height, and the third, characterised by lighter stone, features crenellations and corbels.
The gate on the left (1563-64, designed by architect F. Laparelli under Pope Paul V) replaced the original gate, which had a bayonet structure and was connected to the rampart. On the right, there is an opening (opened in 1860 by F. Dasti) that is in line with the unfinished inner gate tower.
