Council Hall

Old Town

Council Hall

1960s

The current Council Hall was built in the 1960s, after the demolition of the pre-existing structures of the former Municipal Theatre (Teatro Comunale). It is a large hall, with a wooden truss roof, whose windows overlook both sides of the building, the square and via S. Pancrazio. To the right of the entrance door are the remains of a fresco from the Chapter Room of the Convent of San Marco, which was detached and moved there to uncover another older fresco lying underneath. Both frescoes illustrate a crucifixion scene with saints. On the opposite wall, visitors can admire three large works (pastel on paper) by the Chilean painter Sebastian Matta entitled ‘Perché le vittime vincano’ (1974), which were donated by the author himself to the municipality of Tarquinia for the Council Hall in 1975. You can also admire the remains of a fresco, which is a testimony to the ancient chapel of the building. In addition to being the seat of the municipal council, the Hall often hosts cultural events such as conferences, meetings, concerts, and other events.
