Church of St. Antonio

Old Town

Church of St. Antonio

13th century

The church, constructed in the 13th century, exhibits a clear Romanesque style with three naves divided by pillars and a gabled facade. However, it fell into complete disrepair and closed for worship in 1915. Recently, the Russian Orthodox community financed additional restoration work, enabling it to be once again used for their worship. Concurrently, the square in front of the church was redesigned, where the small 15th-century church of S. Maria del Mare stands close to the walls. The church of St. Maria del Mare was built, it seems, by the citizens themselves and was urged by St. Bernardino of Siena to build it. The Virgin was venerated there, later moved to the church of St. Antonio.
The hermit used to take care of it originally, but it was granted to the order of the Servites in 1592, and they used it as an infirmary before being passed on to the Congregation of the Discipline in 1779 and eventually to a private individual.
