Madonna di Valverde

Madonna di Valverde

The month of May is dedicated to the Madonna Santissima di Valverde, the Patron Saint of Tarquinia, to whom an ancient sanctuary in the town is dedicated.
The focal point of all celebrations falls on 8th May, which marks the feast day of Madonna di Valverde, the Patron Saint of Tarquinia. Since 2010, by the decree of Bishop Chenis, the feast day has been permanently fixed on this date, after 515 years of being celebrated on a flexible date.
At the end of the celebrations, the traditional procession takes place with the revered icon of the Madonna di Valverde, accompanied by the Giacomo Setaccioli band, through the old town and then returning to the sanctuary.

Procession of the Risen Christ

Procession of the Risen Christ

Procession of the Risen Christ

The Procession of the ‘Running Christ’ is a significant event celebrated on Easter Sunday. The procession features a valuable statue of the Risen Christ being carried through the streets of the town at a brisk pace, almost running, and between two wings of the crowd. The statue was commissioned by the Carpenters’ Guild and completed in 1832. Legend has it that a sculptor, serving a life sentence, was commissioned to carve a Risen Christ in wood superior to those that already existed. However, to prevent the artist from creating a new identical or even more beautiful statue later, he was ruthlessly blinded. The procession is opened by a team of shooters whose rifles are loaded with confetti. An original element of this procession is the bearers of the ‘Tronchi’, large crosses adorned with garlands. The crosses weigh between 75 and 95 kilos, with the largest reaching about 5 metres in height. Transporting the Tronchi requires considerable skill and strength so as not to be thrown off balance during transport. It is a demonstration of strength, skill and endurance.

Saint Anthony Abbot and the Carnival

Tarquinia maintains the tradition of celebrating Saint Anthony the Abbot, the patron saint of animals and protector against epidemics. A parade of animals, led by cowboys known as butteri, marks the beginning of Carnival. Tarquinia celebrates Carnival on three dates with allegorical floats set up in the town’s streets amidst music and a lively, carefree atmosphere.

Nativity Play

Nativity Play

Nativity Play

The old town centre of Tarquinia is converted into a vast open-air stage where more than 200 participants in costumes take part in the event that involves the whole town. The event, held in the oldest quarters of the old town, is a reconstruction of settings and situations from the first century A.D. in Israel, transforming Tarquinia into a miniature Bethlehem. Wooden benches, straw, jute, and cloth are used to create typical situations of that time, such as the market for goods and livestock, the sale of slaves, the census, and the inn. Additionally, a large Roman camp is reconstructed, complete with tents, horses, chariots, and legionnaires in training. On the day of the Epiphany, 6th January, the three Magi, accompanied by three real camels, reach the Nativity scene, crossing the town in a grand procession in which all participants take part.
