Castle Gate and Tower known as Matilda of Canossa Tower

The Porta di Castello and the Torrione, also known as Castle Gate and Matilda of Canossa Tower, are adjacent to the circular keep and form part of a bayonet defence system with a square tower and a walkway between two high walls. This system, called the resechata, was commissioned by G. Vitelleschi in the 15th century to separate the castle from the expanding town during its urban renovation.
